THE TALL SHIPS RACES

Sail Training International (STI) organises competitions and events for sailing ships in many parts of the world. But the single biggest event that it organises, and which takes place in the summer months, is The Tall Ships Races.

The Tall Ships Races are planned four years in advance with a carefully selected route that takes in different seas and places around Europe, from the Baltic Sea to the Mediterranean.

When Sail Training International has selected an upcoming maritime area, relevant ports in the region are welcome to submit tenders to become a host port.

The Tall Ships Races (TSR) has been taking place since 1956. The first race was not intended to become a recurring event, but was instead regarded as a magnificent farewell to the classic and traditional style of ship. Instead, it marked the beginning of a successful tradition, and caused interest in tall ships to sky rocket!

The ground rule was the same then as it is today - at least 50% of the crew must be composed of young people between 15 and 25 years of age. Of these people, it is most often the case that the majority either completely or mostly lack any kind of previous sailing experience!

PROMOTIAL FILM

The Tall Ships Races promotional film shows us what it’s all about in just two minutes. No matter whether you’re young and want to sail, or a mayor who wants to host the races, this is the film that will spark your initial interest!

POTENTIAL HOST CITIES

There are many factors which play a role in whether or not a city can act as the host of the Tall Ships Races.

Sail Training Association of Sweden is prepared to consider the potential of every city and every port, and perhaps within a few years Sweden will be able to offer the Tall Ships Races a seventh host city.
